Deformed Chaffinch II

This male Chaffinch clearly has a hugely swollen chest (it was even more apparent from the side but I could get a shot side on). The swelling could be due to one of several different reasons in the chest, but an internal tumor is a strong possibility. Strangely I had an even odder bird (see here) with a massively deformed head in March 2009. Is there something wrong with my Chaffinches?

Sparrowhawk eats Woodpigeon

Liz and I watched this female Sparrowhawk tucking into this (live) Woodpigeon from our office window this morning. It eventually flew off with it without any difficulty. Strong lass!

Cattle Egret, Nene Washes

Cattle Egret with Lapwings © Steve Dudley

Third time lucky! I dipped this bird the other week when it was first found by Charlie Kitchen. I failed to locate it last night in a dusk vigil, but when Jonathan Taylor relocated it this morning with cattle around the reserve pool I was straight down there! A much needed PBC tick!
