Caspian Gull at Dogsthorpe Tip

Above: the pale underwing (a feature of the species) can be seen in the videograb above. It is not as clean as it could be, but this is probably due to the bird still being rather fresh, and it is still early on in the winter.


Above: this videograb compares the upperwings of first-winter Herring (below) and Caspian (upper left) Gulls. Note how the dark-centred tertials contrast with the coverts on Caspian, with much less contrast shown on Herring.


This image shows the bird's tail pattern - typical of a first-winter Caspian Gull, with the sharply-defined dark band contrasting with the white of the rump and rest of tail. Note how limited black marking is aside the tail band.


A profile view of this distinctive (and large) individual. Note the long-necked, elegant appearance, the small, dark eye, extensive white/paleness to the underparts, and the long, thin bill with virtually no angle at the gonys. The all-dark tertials can also be seen well in this image. This bird is more advanced than some are at time of the year.

Purple Heron at Nene Washes RSPB

This juvenile Purple Heron was found by Jonny Taylor on the reserve near the corral. It proved to be very flighty and was last seen at 12:10 landing on Garners, to the east of the reserve, where it would be best looked for from the south bank at Eldernell.

Presumably this bird was the same one seen at Thrapston Reservoir earlier this month.

The last record for the PBC area was in 1995 when a juvenile was at Maxey GP on the 24th September.

Grey Heron with Identity Crisis?

Grey Heron with Identity Crisis? Has anyone else ever seen a Heron sitting on the water like a Goose. I saw this today at Ferry Meadows. The water was too deep at this point for it to be standing on the bottom. At first glance at a distance, I thought it was a Greylag.

This juvenile bird was present on 29.7.07. Scaly juveniles are perhaps the least often encountered age group of Med Gulls in our area (which are scarce to start with).

Nene Washes Crane

With all due thanks to Charlie, without whom I wouldn't have seen this. Late afternoon at the Nene Washes, with a non birder who is presently staying with me, I got a super view of a Crane in the company of at least 17 Little Egrets. I didn't have my scope with me which was unfortunate, but I did have my DSLR with a Tamron 75-300 zoom. The associated photos were taken at too great a distance, but at least provide a record of what was for me a very exciting spec.
