Swans on Deeping Highbank

Bewick's Swan (left) and Whooper Swan (right) © Will Bowell
From the above photos, note just the black and yellow bill of a Bewick's Swan, whilst Whooper Swans display a yellow and black bill. Whooper Swans are our largest Swan at maximum length, with straight necked profile, with Bewick's Swans being our smallest and more goose like. Also note the different shapes of head, with Bewick's having a more wedged like head shape. Mute Swans & Whooper Swan (right) © Will Bowell Whooper Swans © Will Bowell

The group of Whooper Swans at Deeping Highbank that have been present with Mute Swans have increased to 16. A single Bewick's Swan is also in the herd. They were flushed from feeding in a field south of the river at dusk today and landed on the river, allowing for close views.

Long-tailed Duck, Baston & Langtoft Pits

© Josh Jones

Still present today (Christmas Eve) in very poor light - the above were taken with 200 ISO at 1/15th second. It spent most of its time asleep this afternoon, only waking up when disturbed by low-flying geese or aggressive Coots, but it does appear much more settled.

These birds were part of an amazing fall of waders from the fog at Maxey pits on 23.12.06. In total there were three Bar-tailed Godwits, two Grey Plovers, 26 Knot, two Redshank, one Dunlin, one Oystercatcher and two Curlews in addition to the usual Golden Plovers and Lapwings. Later in the day, Josh Jones also found a Sanderling there and two Dunlin. Click images for bigger versons.

Long-tailed Duck, Baston & Langtoft Pits

This bird was found on the same day as a large number of shorebirds in the PBC Area, with "back-up" species including Common Scoter, Knots, and Grey Plovers. All were presumably the product of the thick fog overnight.

Euro White-fronts, Langtoft West End

A welcome respite from the fog provided the opportunity for these shots.

White-fronted Geese, Langtoft

© Josh Jones

This group of four Eurasian White-fronted Geese (ssp. albifrons) were initially found by the photographer on Sunday (17th) afternoon at Baston & Langtoft Pits. They have since moved, with their Greylag escort, to Langtoft West End, where they were on the lakes here this afternoon (20th). There is of course every possibility they may return to BLGP at some point, but the flock has traditionally favoured the fields opposite West End Pits. Click on the photos for bigger versions.

Whooper Swans at March Farmers

An excellent couple of flight shots by Peter in fantastic light. The top shot perhaps shows why they are wise to fly in 'V' formation! Click for bigger versions.

A record (for the site) 37 Red-crested Pochard was counted at these gravel pits on Sunday by Josh Jones. These excellent flight shots by Peter deplict what beautiful creatures they are.
