Four birds, which have been wintering in the Langtoft area since mid-December at least.

Whooper Swans at Ferry Meadows

Four of the five Whoopers that dropped into Ferry Meadows this morning. Firstly landing on Lynch Lake and then moving to Overton Lake.

Glaucous Gull At Dogsthorpe Tip

© Mike WeedonThis bird was the first white-winged gull we have had locally this winter. It was at the tip on 11.1.09. It can be aged as a second-winter by its generally pale, blotchy plumage, pink bill with darker tip and its pale iris. Iceland Gulls are smaller and gentler looking, with much smaller (generally darker) bill and long wings.

Plenty of gulls around at the moment, though currently a case of quality rather than quantity. Lots of these dark argentatus-type Herrings about this winter, presumably they have come from somewhere a bit further north than here.

This animal was found early afternoon of 22nd November on the Ocean, showing on its own. It regularly dabbled but also took part in short dives for food. Its parents are presumably a Red-crested Pochard and a Pochard. Where has it come from? As it was not associating with the local Red-crested Pochards, perhaps it originates from the continent...
